Rick's Story
No big changes here. I am still the guy that likes to keep things FUN! Yes, there are brief moments of maturity, but my former wife still accuses me of being a big kid.
Maybe you remember the parties Mark & I threw, maybe you remember me in those crazy pep rallies, maybe you remember me kissing Mrs. Wertz in front of most of the school, or leading the Powder-puff cheerleaders, maybe you remember how I sat the bench in football, how I sang "The Battle of New Orleans" in Government unabated by Kelly Eicher's request that I sit down (or those same requests from Mr. Love), maybe you remember me as Krushev, or my joke of the day in Mrs. Turner's English class, or maybe you remember my graduation speech, whatever the reason, I am just glad that you remember me.
Though I went to college in San Diego and lived there for 18 years, I now find myself back in Bakersfield. Been back now for eight years. Why, you ask? Well, my former wife is here with my two kids--Lauren (16) and Richie (12).
I was a Financial Consultant for 20 years--my degree was in finance with an unofficial minor in economics--but now I am the Commercial Wholesale Manager for Farmers Insurance Group, Kern County District.
As you may have inferred, I am now single, been divorced for seven years. Haven't really had the time for dating. Not that I wouldn't, I just don't know where to meet women anymore... Oh where have all ...Expand for more
the good nightclubs gone?
Many of my classmates, I have known since Kindergarten. For you longer-term friends, my father still cuts hair in his barber shop. The same place on the corner of Morning Drive and Breckenridge that he has occupied for nearly 50 years. He is 73 now, but doing very well.
I remember learning about Haley's Comet in Mrs. Lowe's third-grade class. I remember calculating the next visit in its 75-year cycle. I thought 35--my age at its most recent orbit--was so old... Tomorrow I will be 48, and I'm thinking, "that's not so old."
When I was younger--even as recent as our last reunion--I thought making a lot of money was the measure of my success; it was my yardstick. Maybe I am finally starting to mature. I realize now there are so many other things that are much more important.
In fact, I was reminded this weekend, just how important it is to have friends. I had such a good time seeing and being with our classmates. My face is still sore from smiling so much (yea, yea, my face is killing you too, right? That was such an easy lay-up, I was hoping you would walk by that one).
You are the people that I love, that I trust, from a time before I was so cynical, from a time when I was happier. Maybe I should try to be more like that person again... I don't know if I can. At least, I do get this brief reprieve every ten years.
I hope I make it to the next gathering.
